Healing doesn’t begin until we intentionally, respectfully, and patiently uncover our truth.

The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it. – Flannery O’Connor

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Recovery

Some events in life change us forever.

There is simply no going back, there can only be moving forward. The path towards lasting recovery and meaningful healing is complicated; and while there can be similar milestones along the way, each person's journey is unique.

APAA’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion seminar equips leaders to better support their employees, and affect change at their institutions by sharing insight and tools they can learn, improve, and implement.

To scale recovery, we first need to acknowledge the truth about societal inequities, and recognize that there isn’t a level playing field.

A State of Perpetual Trauma

Emergency rooms, emergency medical services, addiction treatment, detox, shelters, and jails can be a never-ending maze where people with mental health and substance use challenges move from one dead end to another in a cycle of perpetual trauma. Sadly, the cycle not only damages the people involved but also causes tremendous collateral damage for families and communities. This repeated failure comes with a high price tag that puts strain on public resources.

Strengthening our Approach

As we look for solutions to address trauma and recovery, APAA sees three key drivers that inform our approach:

  • A focus on long-term recovery

  • The promise that intersectionality holds as a lens for understanding how social determinants of health impact recovery

  • Harnessing the power of community

Living While Black

In support of APAA’s Impact Goal 4: Disrupt systems and make space for everyone, we’re announcing the formation of a first-of-its-kind support group focused on improving health equity, resiliency, and behavioral health outcomes in our community. APAA’s Living While Black support group aims to facilitate self-expression and dialogue in a space where individuals feel welcome and safe.

Group is held every other Thursday from 12 pm-1 pm. Contact comms@apaarecovery.org for more details.
